Chapter Six
“What were you and Penn fighting about last night?” Evelyn took a sip from her soda. It was early in the morning, but she’d already been on the phone with Marsha, who had told her there had been a disturbance at the station last night, involving Logan and Penn. The senior reporter didn’t want to tell her the truth, but eventually Evelyn got it out of her.
Logan had picked her up early. He’d had food—a bag of breakfast burritos and two large drinks. Instead of eating inside, she’d climbed into the truck and they ate as he drove.
“Who told you we were fighting?”
“Marsha.” She took a bite, waiting for him to answer. When he didn’t, she said, “Her cousin Lacy is one of the dispatchers.”
“Shit, I’d forgotten about that. Then you know why.”
“I prefer to get it directly from the source.”
He took another bite of his burrito, and she wondered if he was stalling for time.
After he swallowed, he said, “Penn’s an idiot. You know guys like him. They refuse to believe a woman…”
He paused, and she could tell he was searching for the right words.
“A fat woman?” she supplied.
“A larger woman,” he corrected, “can be attractive. He’s probably so vanilla that, if you squeezed him, you could bottle the extract. Fucking boring, I’m sure.”
Evelyn snorted, barely keeping her soda from escaping through her nose. After she’d cleared her mouth, she burst into laughter. “That’s an image I’ll never be able to get out of my mind. I can’t imagine putting essence of Penn in a cake.”
They both laughed. She had promised herself this morning that she wasn’t going to ask this question, but she couldn’t help herself. After all, she made her living asking questions. “Does it bother you? I mean, the way the other guys look at me? Most men want small, beautiful women on their arms to show off.”
“You are beautiful,” he said without hesitation, and she felt herself flush. “Inky, I don’t give a rat’s ass what Penn thinks of you. I just care that he shows you respect, and if he doesn’t, he’ll get it next time. He was lucky Josh was there last night.”
Evelyn looked out the passenger window. She stared at the passing scenery, wondering, once again, where they were going. She knew they were headed toward the river, but she couldn’t imagine what was out here.
“Don’t let Penn bother you,” he said.
She turned her attention back to Logan. “I’ve put up with men like him my whole life. One of the main reasons I got into BDSM was because I went places with Korey, and she introduced me to men who weren’t judgmental. I had never met a Dom who was, until I met Carl.”
“He’s a wannabe.”
“But you’re not. Even though I haven’t seen a whole lot,” she said.
“No, I’m not. And you should have qualified that statement with you haven’t seen a whole lot—yet.” The look he shot her way was dark and mysterious. “It’s only been a week, Inky, and we have a dungeon to build.
